Evaluate Your Application Development Cost
Answer the questions about platform, design, features, and security, and the app cost calculator turns them into an application development cost estimate you can put in front of a co-founder, a board, or an investor before you’ve talked to a single vendor.
The same calculator prices web apps, cross-platform builds, and the fairly common case of a customer-facing mobile application with an admin panel hiding behind it. Pick an industry. Pick the platforms. Tick the features you actually need, and the total moves as you go.
Two numbers come out the other end. The cost of building the app, in US dollars, and the hours of development behind that cost. The hours matter more than most founders expect. Two agencies can quote the same price for wildly different amounts of work, and the hour count is how you tell which one is padding and which one is cutting corners.
Note: Please answer based on your actual product roadmap. Hiding features to cut costs on paper just leads to an inaccurate estimate.
What the App Cost Calculator Takes Into Account
Six blocks. Each one lines up with a line item in the cost breakdown we hand paying clients, which is the whole reason the number is defensible instead of decorative.
Product design
Your industry first. Then the target platforms: iOS, Android, web, or some mix. Then how custom you want the user interface to be. That last one is a bigger lever than it looks. Template-based screens and a fully custom design can be hundreds of hours apart. Two native apps cost more than one cross-platform codebase, and the calculator reflects that. Industry matters too; a healthcare app carries compliance hours a travel app never sees.
Key features
User authentication, user profiles, search, payments, in-app purchases, file uploads, admin dashboards. This block is where most of the development budget lives, and it’s where the total jumps the most when you flip an answer. Try it. Turn payments on and off and watch.
Communication
Push notifications, SMS messaging, email, in-app chat. Each one is cheap on its own. The expensive version is wanting all four, with delivery tracking, plus moderation, plus the admin view that shows who sent what.
Interactivity
Activity feed. Maps and geolocation. QR code scanning. Bluetooth connectivity to some external device. Offline mode. Hardware integrations always take longer than the spec suggests, and we mean always, not usually.
Security and ownership
Two-factor authentication, encryption at rest and in transit, role-based access, whatever compliance framework applies (HIPAA, PCI DSS, SOC 2), and who owns the code from day one. You should. With us you do. App security is the block people scope lightest and regret most.
Promotion
Monetization model, whether that’s subscriptions, ads, or a one-time purchase. Analytics. Crash reporting. The App Store and Google Play listing work, which sounds trivial until you’ve done it three times in a week. Not glamorous. Still hours.
A few things the calculator deliberately leaves out: maintenance after launch (budget 15–20% of the build cost per year), hosting and cloud platforms, third party services that bill you monthly on their own, and marketing. Better to say so here than at contract stage.
How Our App Development Calculator Works
Three steps. Four minutes if you already know what you’re building, closer to ten if you’re deciding as you click.
- Fill out the questionnaire. Twenty-seven questions, mostly single-choice, each option with a short tooltip so you don’t need a project manager sitting next to you.
- Leave your contact details. The ballpark quote appears right away. We ask for an email because the app cost calculator report is worth keeping, and because a human on our side reads every submission.
- Read your rough estimate: the cost of building the app, hours of development, and the feature list you picked. One screen.
After that it’s your call. If you want a precise estimate, a LITSLINK representative reaches out within 48 hours, collects the detailed requirements, and our Solution Architects and Product Managers turn those into a full quote with a project timeline attached. NDA first, before you share anything sensitive. If all you wanted was a number for a budget slide, keep the number. No follow-up campaign is wired to this form.
How to Estimate App Development Cost Without a Calculator
Worth understanding even if you use ours, because it’s where the number comes from.
Every application development cost estimate, ours included, is the same formula in different clothes:
Development hours × hourly rate + project management and QA overhead = total cost
Hours come from scope: screens, features, integrations, platforms. The rate comes from who builds it. Senior US-based engineers commonly bill $100–$200 an hour. Senior teams in Central and Eastern Europe charge a good deal less for comparable work, which is the whole logic behind LITSLINK’s setup: US-based project management, European engineering, overlapping hours. The total comes down. The seniority doesn’t.
Project management and QA aren’t optional extras, though plenty of quotes treat them that way. Figure 10–15% of hours for a PM and 15–25% for testing. Skip either and you pay for it in rework, usually the week before launch, usually at a worse rate.
App development cost breakdown by stage
Here’s roughly how development time splits on a LITSLINK project. Use it to sanity-check any quote that hides the stages inside one lump sum.
| Stage | Share of total hours | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Discovery and scoping | 5–10% | Requirements, user flows, tech stack decision, detailed breakdown of the estimate |
| UI/UX design | 10–15% | Wireframes, clickable prototype, final screens |
| Development | 45–55% | Frontend, backend, integrations, admin panel |
| QA and testing | 15–25% | Manual and automated tests, device coverage, security checks |
| Project management | 10–15% | Sprint planning, reporting, your single point of contact |
| Release | 3–5% | App Store and Google Play submission, production deployment |
Typical ranges by app complexity
For a sense of scale, here’s how our own quotes for mobile app development cost tend to cluster:
- Prototype or proof of concept: From $10K – One platform, the basic features, enough to put in front of real users and see if they care.
- Full custom minimum viable product: From $40K – Cross-platform or native, user authentication, payments, a proper backend, both stores.
- Enterprise-ready product: From $80K – Advanced features, integrations with whatever systems you already run, compliance work, heavier security.
Where you land depends on your answers. That’s why the calculator asks 27 questions instead of three.
What Drives Mobile App Development Cost Up (or Down)
Two apps can look identical in the store and carry very different development costs underneath. In our experience, the gap comes from five places.
- Platform choice. Native iOS plus native Android is two codebases and roughly double the frontend hours. A cross-platform framework shares most of that and typically trims the mobile development timeline by around a third.
- Design level. Template screens go fast. A custom user interface with its own animations, illustrations, and design system does not, and every custom screen drags QA hours along with it.
- Integrations. Payments, maps, a CRM, an EHR, accounting software. Call it a week or more per third-party API, then testing, then maintenance the day the provider changes something.
- Compliance. Security regulations such as HIPAA, PCI DSS, SOC 2, and GDPR. There are architecture, logging, and audit aspects of regulated apps that are never in a feature list and never get cheaper.
- Backend and data. An application that reads from another database is inexpensive. Contrary to popular belief, real-time sync, high-traffic infrastructure, and machine learning features are not cheap.
The three things that will consistently bring down development costs: scope the MVP, reuse a backend and/or codebase you already have, and make your app cross-platform unless it absolutely requires deep native hardware access. You can check all three with the calculator. Change an answer, compare the totals.
Web Development Cost vs. Mobile Development Cost
Same formula but different inputs.
Mobile app development consumes hours on device coverage: Screen sizes, OS versions, store review cycles, push setup, and, if it’s a native app, two codebases or a framework, such as Flutter or React Native. Fragmentation between manufacturers is a major reason Android apps need additional QA.
Web development bypasses the device matrix and app stores. It takes browser compatibility, responsive designs, SEO, and typically a more substantial back end since the web application is often the business administration and customer end as well. Hosting and cloud platforms fall on that side of the ledger too and keep charging after launch.
For plenty of products, the honest answer is both. So the software development cost calculator lets you pick a combination of platforms rather than forcing one. Ask for a mobile application and a web app together, and the estimate accounts for the shared backend instead of pricing everything twice.
Accurate Cost Estimates Before You Talk to Vendors
Why bother with a calculator when you could just request quotes? A few reasons we’ve watched play out with clients.
- You walk into vendor calls with a baseline for development costs. A quote three times above your estimate deserves hard questions. So does one three times below, frankly more so.
- You find out which features are driving the cost. Toggle one off, watch the total drop. That’s a scoping session compressed into a click.
- Minutes instead of days. The old discovery routine is a call, a questionnaire, a week of silence, a PDF. This is the same first step with you doing it, now.
- Scope stays in your hands. Detailed requirements before a sales call put you in charge of the conversation, not the vendor.
- It’s free, and it’s upfront about being a ballpark. There’s a reason every result says “discuss details with our Sales.” Requirements change. The number follows.
Who This Is For
Founders validating an app idea before raising a round, or before spending their own money. Product leads at small and mid-sized companies budgeting a new mobile app, or an internal web app, for next fiscal year. CTOs weighing in-house development costs against outsourcing. Agencies and consultants who need a quick sanity check on a client’s expectations before kickoff. And anyone who has heard “it depends” one too many times and would like a number with the reasoning attached.
Building something AI-heavy, like a chatbot, a recommendation engine, or computer vision? This software development calculator won’t price it well. Use our AI Cost Estimation Calculator instead. Different inputs, different cost structure.
Estimates Calibrated on 1,540+ Real Projects
An app development calculator is only as good as the data behind it. LITSLINK has shipped 1,540+ projects for 1,000+ clients across 82+ countries since 2014, and the calculator’s pricing is tuned against those engagements rather than industry averages lifted from someone else’s blog. Clutch has us at 4.8 across 70+ reviews.
Two things about how we work that are worth knowing before you book anything. US-based project management paired with senior European engineering, overlapping with US business hours, fluent English, no 2 a.m. status calls. And from a signed contract to a working MVP in as little as 10 weeks. The hour count the calculator gives you is where that clock starts.
Want the longer version? We’ve written it up: Flutter app development cost, React Native app pricing, Android app development cost, and what mobile app maintenance really costs.
FAQ
How accurate is the app development cost calculator?
Accurate enough to work around. Not good enough to sign off on. If the answers match the actual scope, the final quote comes close to the estimate. If there is a significant gap, it’s nearly always because a feature was skipped or an integration was much more complex than it first appeared. The fine-print quote our team creates after a requirements call is the one you should plan for.
Is the software development cost calculator free? Do I have to talk to sales?
Free, and no. You enter an email to see the quote, and someone reaches out once, within 24 hours. Not ready? Say so. That’s the end of it.
Does it cover web apps and cross-platform apps, or only iOS and Android?
All of them. On the platform question, select either web, iOS, Android, or all three; the hours change. This is reflected in a cross-platform build with Flutter or React Native, which typically costs less than two native apps.
What’s the difference between the ballpark estimate and a detailed quote?
The ballpark is the math of your 27 answers. A detailed quote is a person who is applying judgment to your actual product: a requirements call, a review of existing designs/docs, a scoped proposal with a timeline and a named team. The first one will take 4 minutes and is free. The second one takes around a week and is also free. Figure the cost of the latter.
How long does it take to build an app?
The answer is the hour count, and the calculator provides you with that. A quick rule of thumb: prototype takes 6-10 weeks, full MVP 3-5 months, enterprise-grade product 6-12 months. Like costs, timelines extend for two reasons: there will be two native platforms to integrate, there will be heavy integrations, and compliance will be an issue. Some of the added time comes from engineers, but not all of it. It takes 9 people a week to build a backend.
What’s usually missing from an app development quote?
The things that bill after launch. Hosting and cloud infrastructure. Third-party API subscriptions (Stripe, Twilio, Google Maps). Apple and Google developer accounts. Post-launch maintenance, which runs 15–20% of the build cost per year. Marketing, obviously. And in a surprising number of quotes, QA testing, which some agencies list as a separate line and some quietly leave out. Ask.
Should I start with an MVP, and what does one cost?
Usually yes. A minimum viable product typically costs 30–50% of the full app and ships in a fraction of the time, and what real users do with it tends to rewrite the spec anyway. Our MVP work clusters at $40K–$100K for a cross-platform build with authentication, payments, and a proper backend. Pick the MVP options in the calculator and compare the total against a full feature set. The gap is the point.
